Art Photography
Fujifilm Finepix Natural low lighting
I must admit, I've painted many self portraits with a mirror, and have sketched my own face in this manner hundreds of times from the time I was 12. I believe it was this practice that helped me to sharpen my portrait skills and check in on my mental state. I had the notion as a young teenager to run off to the circus and make a living doing 15 minute sketches of people on the spot. Fate had other plans. This self portrait photo is my 3rd attempt in this medium. Girl with a Pearl Earring by Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer has always been a striking image for many, so I donned some earrings and struck a pose.

Photo's are great, they say alot about a person, and can hide notting...
Hope you too, can smile more soon. Gots to love them ears.
Beautiful Alice ,
I hope this is the portrait you sent to Karin ?
Well HELLLLOOOOO Alice! What a beautiful woman and artistic photo! I just got myself cleaned up and took the shot lol But that just tells me that everything you do is art-inspired! Well the photo I have to paint is low-res so I guess it will force me to paint loosely :)
It's funny, all the wild and brave ideas we come up with to use our talents!
PS. I love you quote from Holmes ! I might steal it.
? ANoNYmous or is it anonymous ?
Your right that photos "can hide notting..." althought dim lighting helps the illusion ;)
I once was told, long ago that it was the earrings that made a woman beautiful.
Thank you for the hope.
Dominique, Yes this is the self portrait I did for the challenge.
Holmes words belong to us all. Take them and inscribe them on your heart.
Erika, you make me laugh my friend.
You should do something different with this portrait-very different. We all know you can render a face accurately and lovely. Your free to paint it however you like. I wouldn't mind seeing a few cubist/surreal styles showing up. Make it punch off the page. Surprise us.
Alice,
I love this. You've given somebody a wonderful portrait to start from and I can't wait to see their. interpretation.

Alice, you are as beautiful as I imagined! Love your photo. It looks like a page torn from some fashion magazine. Good thing that Karin did not assign your photo to me, because I'm sure I will mess it up. :(
This DSFDF is really exciting. I'm glad that I signed up for this. My favorite portrait is one of the self-portraits by Gustave Courbet. I wish I could paint like that one day!
MEB,
Thank you for taking the time to visit my Blog today and for leaving such wonderful comments. It's always nice to hear from you. I wanted the person who received my portrait to have a strong compositional base to begin with. I think no matter how she crops it, things should work.
Akiko, It's just the earrings and low lighting fooling you.
There is no way YOU could mess it up. I would love to have had you turn me into an animal, like a cat maybe? I want your self portrait photo in my email box. Please?
Gustave Courbet was quite the character. I just got back from looking him up in Google. He did a lot of self portraits... you must be referring to "The Desperate Man" self portrait... I agree he was mighty skilled with a paintbrush.
I was gonna ask permission to use your photo for myself, maybe for a group show coming up that I have in June - thanks so much! You read my mind, I am approaching my DSDF subject a cubist twist. Thanks bebeh!
This is Amazing- you are a real beauty! The mood and colors are fantastic!
Special request- please send me one of these self portraits not exactly like this one but in another sense, I'll love to do something with it drawing wise!
Adebanji, You were the man I wanted from the hat. I knew I would have gotten a great photo to work from and I was ready to paint what most eyes can't see about you. I will grant your request in hope that you will do the same for me.
